Albany, NY: Today, advocates and the members of the Team Tackling Toxics, comprised of NYS legislators sponsoring key PFAS legislation for the 2025 session, met at the Capitol to urge the Assembly to use its final days take action on key bills that will protect consumer and the environment from PFAS.
They called for the Assembly to urgently act on a suite of PFAS bills that passed the Senate: The Beauty Justice Act (A.2054A (Glick) and the Ban on PFAS in Consumer Products Bill (A. 7738 (Glick), along with The Packaging Reduction and Recycling Infrastructure Act (Glick) noting it would ban PFAS and other toxics in packaging, the PFAS Discharge Disclosure Act (Kelles) and the Biosolids Landspreading Moratorium (Kelles) See details on these bills here.
PFAS are a class of synthetic “forever chemicals” that accumulate in the environment and our bodies that contribute to health conditions like: hormone disruption, infertility, organ disruption, and even cancer. Chemicals within the PFAS class can be found in personal care products like lotion, make-up, shaving cream, ect and everyday consumer products like: cookware, rugs, textiles, dental floss, ski wax, and more. Passing these key bills will be the next step New York State takes to protect consumers and the environment.
“There is a near-constant barrage of scientific evidence underscoring the need for urgent action to ‘turn off the tap’ on PFAS. We’re in the last days of the 2025 session, the clock is winding down, and the opposition is trying any play they can to keep profiting from these toxic chemicals. The Assembly must act now on PFAS legislation, especially the Beauty Justice Act and the Ban on PFAS in Consumer Products” said Bobbi Wilding, Executive Director of Clean+Healthy, which co-leads the JustGreen Partnership.
NRDC released an analysis of the costs of PFAS to New Yorkers, estimating billions in cost for health care, drinking water remediation, and cleanup from contaminated sites. New York State can no longer wait to take action. The time is now. We cannot afford to wait any longer. Advocates recommend calling their Assemblymember’s office, demanding they take action on PFAS before the end of session. The graphic from NRDC’s report is below.
“New Yorkers and our communities are inundated by exposure to toxic chemicals each and every day, and in ways that we don't even realize. Ridding our environment of these ubiquitous toxins will improve public health and help to reduce the costs of healthcare and expensive filtration of drinking water. This package of PFAS and toxics bills will help limit multiple pathways of toxic chemical exposures, in products, in our soil, and in our communities. The Sierra Club urges immediate passage in the Assembly before they gavel out this week." said Caitlin Ferrante, Conservation Program Manager, Sierra Club Atlantic Chapter.
“The business community urges the New York State Assembly to pass the PFAS in Consumer Products bill and the Beauty Justice Act without delay. Our businesses and economy depend on a healthy citizenry. PFAS contamination across product categories and toxic chemicals in personal care and cosmetic products have serious health impacts. There is no time to wait in ensuring the safety of New Yorkers and accelerating the transition to safer alternatives.” said Bob Rossi, Executive Director of the New York Sustainable Business Council (NYSBC)
“The toxic chemicals used in cosmetics and personal care products pose a grave threat to the health of women of color, particularly Black women. Public health professionals, environmental advocates, business leaders, and the New York State Senate, which already passed the Beauty Justice Act, agree that this legislation is important and urgent to protect all New Yorkers from harmful exposure to these dangerous ingredients. We urge Speaker Heastie to bring this bill to a vote in the Assembly today.” explained Briana Carbajal, State Legislative Manager at WE ACT for Environmental Justice.
